The light comes up. Elements which identify a single-family residence, not too large, situated far from the city. There is a table and there could be a window through which enters the light of this sunless day. She has a bag open and removes several objects from it, a mixture of tools necessary for the upkeep of the home. The Husband enters; he carries a toolbox and a partially constructed wooden contraption.

The HusbandOh.

SheWhat?

The HusbandYou’ll probably need the table.

SheI do need it.

The HusbandDamn, it’s cold!

He sits down on the floor, opens the box. He takes out a hammer, pliers, nails, a chisel …

SheWhat are you going to do here, now?

The HusbandYou need the table.

SheYou’ll dirty the floor and then, you, you won’t sweep up. Go and play outside.

The HusbandPlay …

SheWell, if it’s not any fun, stop it.

The HusbandI want to finish today.

SheWe shouldn’t have come.

The Husband has begun to work, trimming the wood with the chisel, fitting together pieces, trying holes, nailing nails …

The HusbandThe girls picked a fine day.

SheAll in all, we picked a fine day.

The HusbandThey could catch cold hiking in the mountains. Here we’ve got good heating.

SheWhen the house does finally heat up it’ll be time for us to leave.

The HusbandIt’ll heat up in an hour, and we’re leaving tomorrow evening.

SheTomorrow afternoon.

The telephone rings.

The HusbandWe’ll decide later. (He picks up the receiver, since She has not moved.) Hello. Yes, just a minute. (To her.) For you.

She stops what she was doing and goes to take the receiver from The Husband’s hands.

SheHello. Hello. (Annoyed.) Hello! (To The Husband.) Did they ask for me?

The HusbandYes.

SheNo one is saying anything. Hello! (Waits a moment and hangs up.)

The HusbandA problem with the connection.

SheWho could it be?

The HusbandI don’t know. A woman.

SheWhich one?

The HusbandI didn’t recognise her voice. She’ll call again.

The telephone goes click.

SheNow they’ve hung up.

The HusbandShe’ll call again.

SheAnd on top of everything, it’s as though we were completely cut off from the rest of the world.

The Husband (calmly)You liked it. You liked the place and you liked the house. With the central heating installed and the phone connected.

SheHello, hello, but no one answers.

The HusbandIt’s a good house. At least on Saturdays and Sundays, not having to put up with the noise in the city.

SheNext time we should bring more blankets.

The HusbandAnd in summer, you’ll see.

SheAt least lay some newspaper down and put your inventions on top of it. You’ll scratch the floor.

The HusbandGive it to me.

She hands him some of the crumpled paper from which she has been unpacking objects.

SheHere. (The Husband will open up the paper, place it on the floor and put all his tools on it.) I need to do some shopping.

The HusbandGet me some cigarettes.

SheIf I remember. Rice, olive oil, salt, vinegar, clothes-pegs, a tin-opener ... I should probably write it all down.

The HusbandWrite down the cigarettes.

SheShe hasn’t called back. Well, you’ll need to tell the phone company.

The HusbandWhat?

SheWhoever phoned hasn’t called back.

The HusbandAre you expecting a call?

SheLast week the same thing, exactly the same.
